Like others, I discovered Mr. Kharitonov via a youtube video “Song of the Volga Boatmen (1965)” Amazing performance despite the limitations of 1960′s audio technology. I am delighted now to see that he continues to perform. Absolutely amazing voice. If providence ever brought him to tour the opera circuit in Texas, I would definitely pay money well above the usual fair to see him.

  10. Matthew says:

The voice of Leonid Kharitonov is truly legendary; I doubt anyone could challenge his vocal prestige! As a humble Bass in a school choir, I can only dream of being no more than a small fraction of this great man.

What really makes Kharitonov exceptional to me is the vast array of emotions and feelings he expresses in his work. From light-hearted “Dark-eyed Cossack Girl” or mysterious “Night-Parade” to the awe-invoking performance of “The Ballad About Russian Boys”, Leonid Kharitonov never fails to completely submerge himself and his audience in the performance. If someone is not inspired by Leonid Kharitonov, they must not be listening!

Congratulations, your art is wonderful, you made me feel powerful, proud, strong, but also i felt pain and then hope and joy. I would like to hear you singing alive, it must be a unique experience. Hello! Let me first say that I am a great fan of Mr. Kharitonov’s rendition of ‘Volga Boatmen’, it’s by far one of my favorite versions of the song. Are the songs hosted on this website fair use/creative commons? I was thinking of using ‘Yo Heave Ho’ in a video. I saw all the songs available for download in the Music section and I haven’t seen any indicator that the songs were licensed or not, so I’d thought I’d ask just to be sure. I would give credit to Mr. Kharitonov in the video, of course. Please reply and let me know if I could use the song!

I first came across Russian music when I played “Song of the Volga Boatmen” in a brass ensemble and decided to check more into traditional Russian & Eastern European music. When I first saw & heard Mr. Kharitonov singing Ey Uhnem, I was almost blown away. What a terrific voice he has (and facial & body expression in “Dark-eyed Cossack Girl” ;) )! The same applies for all the other songs I have listened to so far on YouTube. The Alexandrov Ensemble is a fantastic accompanying orchestra to the great voice of Mr. Kharitonov.

Mr. Kharitonov is, quite simply, one of the finest artists I have ever heard. To me, his recording of “The Cliff” (“утес”) is not merely peerless, it is definitive. He has one of the finest, most powerful and most versatile voices I have heard in nearly 20 years of listening to “classical” vocal music.

I do hope that, despite his advanced years, this exceptional artist will some day find it possible to make a trip to Britain. I for one would be happy to go almost anywhere in these isles, to hear the awe-inspiring power of Mr. Kharitonov’s voice at first hand.

I give my best wishes, both to you and to Mr. Kharitonov. He is, without a doubt, one of the greatest male vocalists of our age. Long may he live!

As wonderful as the videos are, I was wondering: have there ever been any LP or CD recordings made of Mr. Kharitonov singing? (with or without the Alexandrov Chorus). It would be so excellent to be able to hear his voice on my stereo that could do it justice, rather than on my computer, which is only average. If there have been sound recordings made–whenever and wherever–would it be possible to post label and catalog number so I could search for them?

    Dear Master Kharitonov,
I want to send you a handwritten russian letter, but I don’t no how to do that, because I haven’t a PC for writing in russian – can you give me an adress to send it to you? I’m so touched by your song “The long-range guns keep silent” – there are my tears! I’m a german woman, learning russian language (and like it and the russian culture!) at school and was in Russia long years ago, had and lost friends there – but my russian speaking is not so good now – not enough to understand the words of this song (and there isn’t an russian text or an englisch translation), but I mean, its aubout memories of WW2 and the russian victims of it? I know, you lost your father there … and as a german people I had to feel guilty (I was born in 1949, but i think so)!
You are a very great singer and actor (I like some other songs too – so the “Volga boatmen” – I know Repin and the “Wandering artists” – kanjeschno), but I’m feeling (I’ve seen your touchable video-greeting for fans), you are a man of human thinking too, who loves peace more than all! And we need peace between russian and german people too – peace forever! So many THANKS, GREETINGS and GOOD WISHES from Germany to you and your family!!! Balschoje spassibo i wsjewo charoschewo!!! And please: Where can I send my handwrite russian letter (with some mistakes … ;-) ))? Dear Richard.

Thank you very much! It’s great to hear that you so enjoy the artist’s work. The performance you refer to would likely be from sometime in the 60′s. Is the video on this web site?

      All the best to you!

    Dear Leonid Mikhailovitch Kharitonov,
It’s a need for me from my heart to send a big THANK to You at second time, because I’m listening for your voice, your songs every day, since I heard and saw it at first time some weeks ago – with deep impressions for me everytime, when I can listen to your strong and soulfull performances! I love many of your songs, I need them for my daily living, thinking and feeling. All that brings to me again a deep thinking about Russian an German history and about the meaning and real possibility of peace and friedship between all peoples of the world – and about the great power of art and love! Thank you so much for that experience!!!
I wish you all the best: Love for you and your family and health for your body and soul – and now a Happy easter too! (I so much want to write in Russian, I learned Russian language long time ago – but sorry – that is a technical problem with my “german” Computer and the functionally limits of mailing in that website …)
    And dear Mikhail Leonidovitch Kharitonov,
Thank you so much for your good big work in Youtube and this Kharitonov-Website – for me (and I see, not only for me, but for a lot of people around the world!) a very important discovery! And because it’s important to understand better (the music for soul, the words for brain …), I need the words too – and so I hope, you can give us, please, the lyrics of one of my favourite songs “The long-range guns keep silent” too – if not in English, maybe in Russian – I myself can try to translate it! But I don’t find it out at Internet.
With Thanks and heartly-heartly-heartly regards from Germany!!!

    Большое, большое спасибо!
(Wow – it was technical difficult in Russian …)
My best wishes to you from Germany!
(I hope you got my emails with little paintings of shining stars?)

    Dear Mikahail and Maestro Kharitonov,

Thank you so much! Mikhail, thank you for putting your father’s works on youtube and the internet and sharing your dad with the world. I can only imagine the effort that goes behind the scenes getting it online and translating the songs into English. Because of your work I am able to share your father’s work in my humanities class. My students are always blown away the first time they hear your father, and appreciate all the songs I share with them in class. Thank you so much for your efforts and work!! Without you this would not be possible, and people in the US would not know about your father.

Maestro Kharitonov – thank you so much for your beautiful songs and words, they are truly a gift to the world. You singing has not only inspired me, but it has inspired the students in my college humanities class. Personally I have to thank you for your songs. They have inspired me each and every day (I cannot go a day without listening to your music). You have touched my heart deeply and are an example and inspiration to me. Thank you so much!

Most illustrious Russian singer, Mr. Leonid Kharitonov.
I am from Brazil. I am a student of singing myself, and I must tell you that your voice and your vocal technique are sublime. The power your voice has grabs my gut. Ever since I heard your voice on a Melodija record back in the 1980s, I have found few, if any, singers that enthrall me.
May God bless you and your family.

  40. Romanian Journalist says:

    Dear Mr. Mikhail Kharitonov,

Please accept my best wishes to you and Maestro Leonid KHARITONOV!
I am a Romanian journalist and an unconditional admirer of your work, meaning both the splendid performances of your father and the dedicated & intelligent effort of yours, using the Internet resources in order to allow people from all over the world and the new generation to take benefit from the exceptional masterpieces of Mr. Leonid KHARITONOV & The Red Army Choir!
I noticed that, regarding at least “The Song of the Volga Boatmen” film from 1965, you do not recollect the name of the german cameraman.
Well, as a modest homage for the delight of listening to Maestro Leonid Kharitonov and the Alexandrov Ensemble, I took the liberty to do some research for the cameraman. I so came to the conclusion that it is highly probable that beautiful film was taken (maybe also directed) by a certain Walter RIML. Could you kindly ask Maestro Kharitonov if that name rings a bell? Other elements: Walter Riml was a 2,05 m high person and he used to work both for German Director Leni Riefenstahl and for some U.S. directors. I think that it is very important for the public of your remarcable father and the Alexandrov Ensemble to recuperate all details regarding their masterpieces.
    Respectfully yours,
    Cornel Coman

I am 19 years old, and some months ago I started being interested in Russian culture, folk, and music.

The I discovered de magic voice of Leonid Kharitonov. I still can’t understand how I had never heard from him, as one of the best man singer ever, with Placido Domingo, Pavarotti and so.

Many people are worried because they thing this culture, classical music, folk, will disappear.

While some young people like me still are, this greatness will be in our hearts forever and ever.

Thank you very much for existing, Maestro
