Happy New Year from L. Kharitonov!

December 30 2009   3 Commented

New Year 2010Thanks so much to all of you for your very nice comments and your attention to our web site! Recently, Leonid Kharitonov asked us to wish a Happy New Year to all of his fans and friends and those who admire his creative work! He enjoys hearing from you very much, and we, the web site’s administrators, are interested to know your thoughts and suggestions for our web site as well.

We hope you’ll enjoy this special New Year’s performance of Dark-Eyed Cossack Girl. This song was written especially for Leonid Kharitonov in 1966. This specially made video uses a very rare 1971 audio version of the song.

This video was made in high resolution. You can also see two famous Russian movie actors in the very beginning of this clip. First is Mikhail Pugovkin as a policeman and second is Leonid V. Kharitonov (NOT the singer!) as himself knocking on the window… The footage was taken from the 1969 musical movie “New Year’s Kidnapping”.

The song is about a Cossack Soldier who once met a dark-eyed Cossack girl and asked her to shoe his horse. The girl agreed and asked for a very small price. The man asked her name since he liked her very much. The girl refused to tell her name and answered that the Cossack would hear it right from under his horse’s shoes when he rides it. The Cossack started riding his horse and guessing her name – Masha? Zina? Dasha? Nina?.. No, they were all wrong… KATYA, KATYA, KATERINA – the horseshoes knocked her name…!!! Since those times wherever the Cossack went he always whispered “KATYA, KATYA, KATERINA”… He was thinking that that was an obsession since he already had another girlfriend. But the strange thing was that he could never take that Cossack girl’s name out of his chest as it was a never ending song inside there…

ENJOY!!!

Lyrics:

Once a dark-eyed Cossack girl
Shod my horse.
She asked for a small amount of money
Not highly valuing her work.
What’s your name, young lady?
And the young lady replies:
“You’ll hear my name
In the clatter of your horse’s hooves.”

I rode along the street,
I galloped the roads,
And along the path among brown rocks,
And among gray rocks.
“Masha? Zina? Dasha? Nina?”
None seem to be her name.
“Katya! Katya!” – was sounded to me
By my racer’s horseshoes.

And since that time, whether I ride
Or whether I gallop –
“Katya, Katya, Katerina…” –
I endlessly whisper.
What a muddle-head I am!
Because I have another girlfriend!
But I cannot get Katya, like a song,
Out from my soul, brother!

Once a dark-eyed Cossack girl
Shod my horse.
She asked for a small amount of money
Not highly valuing her work.
What’s your name, young lady?
And the young lady replies:
“You’ll hear my name
In the clatter of your horse’s hooves.”

Thank you very much, Christiane, for your comment! I guess that it would be difficult to find any information about this movie on the English speaking web sites. But I’ll be glad to share with you some links in Russian here --

Thank you so much. I will see how I get on. My Russian is very weak. It starts with “My name is” and it end with how old I am. But I’ll Find a way to work it out. I don’t like the Google translations becaus it does ridiculous tranlations.
