Sunset on the Volga

Last year, ten days after Leonid Kharitonov passed away, “The New York Times” honoured him by including one of his performances among their musical selections (at the bottom of the page). We have received this link just recently and would like to share it with all of his fans. We would like to thank Julie van de Mheen for sending this link to us.

“Sunset on the Volga
News of the recent death of the Russian bass Leonid Kharitonov came as blow to those of us who cherish old recordings of the Red Army Choir (a.k.a. Soviet Army Chorus). He was the mainstay in the group’s mainstay, “The Song of the Volga Boatmen.” Several versions are available on YouTube, but the finely modulated closing refrains here, with film of the sun setting over the Volga, seem especially poignant for the occasion.”
