Lyrics:

Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
Now we fell the stout birch tree,
Now we pull hard: one, two, three.
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
Now we fell the stout birch tree

Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
On the bank we walk along,
To the sun we sing our song.
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
To the sun we sing our song.

Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
One more time, once again
Ah, you–Volga–Mother River
Wide and deep
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
Ay-da, da, ay-da!
Wide and deep.

Magnificent music, an outstanding talent. Thank you so much for this site and the youtube channel. We are lucky to be be able to hear this wonderful voice, growing up in South Africa where we didn’t hear music from ‘behind the iron curtain’. Mr Kharitonov is an inspirational man and a great role-model for vocalists everywhere, Thank you! his kindness and humility comes across in his performances.

    Dear Mr. Kharitonov.
Thank you for your tribute to one of the greatest emotions in the world: singing. Your performances will live forever as a sample of greatest voice and natural techniques of singing. What a voice! And all comes so naturally for you! I just viewed the thank you video from april 2009. Your sincerity is heart warming.
The video from 1965 with Red Army Choir is one of my all time favourite music videos.
I have been singing in a male choir for many years and would love to hear you singing. Do you still perform? I would be so honoured to know if so, I would make a trip to that concert!
My kindest regards to you with all my best wishes,

      Dear Eythor.

Thank you for your heartfelt comments! Unfortunately, the singer has been retired since 2006. All comments are shared with him, and he greatly appreciates hearing from his fans.

Good luck with your singing, and all the best!

        Dear Mikhail,

I would like to ask you something regarding the lyrics of this song.
I would like to know what is your father singing about(what are the lyrics of this song) and the English translation of it for the words that he is singing in the video above”“Yo, heave ho!” Live” version of it in the time between 3′ 24 and 3′ 34 seconds…
This is because i can not find the lyrics in the song version(lyrics)..or anywhere on the internet for this song.

Thank you very much in advance.

While i am waiting for the answer i wish you and your family all the best.

        Nikola

  8. anything could sound nice with Aleksandrov choir… especially this song, and a singer like that… I would definitely like to see them in my city again… They were here in Belgrade almost two decades ago, I was to young to remember anything, except ad which had various videos of Red Army….

  9. Magnificent – and thank you so much, LHaritonov, for letting us see Boris give Leonid Kharitonov a well-deserved hug at the end. Definitely sung better than Chaliapin’s version.
